TABLAPONG (2004)

Text by Jaygo Bloom

The Intellect behind TABLAPONG

Learning is becoming an important feature of our culture as culture becomes an important carrier of our learning processes.

People live in multiple shared spaces, over the distance, beyond borders, and across cultures. A high percentage of us share leisure time, and are now in contact with and play computer games on a daily basis. These shared spaces are communities, and are collectively forming a ‘new’ global society.

Independent learning is rapidly taking shape within the social dimension of game playing.

How on earth could Pong still possibly remain a leading contender and contribute towards this growing awareness of a ‘new’ global society?

Introducing TABLAPONG
The games console as ‘representative’ and ‘conservationalist’

Through a process of Information exchange and a series of participatory responses, JAYGO BLOOM has created a system through which it is possible to preserve the fundamental principles of any alternative secular tradition, whilst simultaneously playing the familiar games console classic Pong.

For demonstration purposes JAYGO BLOOM’S particular ‘gameplay’ technique provides the structure and tempo for an alternative Audiovisual Tabla accompaniment. As content is randomly generated in response to the ‘gameplay’ tactics, the interplay of technology and culture reinforces the learning experience into bite-sized chunks of data, to be listened to, to be watched and to be considered.

HURRAY FOR LIMITED CONTROL!
LONG LIVE PONG!

Expected Outcome

The first phase in an intelligent user interface. Users should be able to interact with and generate information through the playing of games.
